Summertastic
Today we mostly messed about in water, damming the Henbury Brook until we had a reservoir to jump in. We made boats that sank, better luck tomorrow. Most went home wet

Summertastic, "The Jungle Blackboard", August 2011
Three weeks in to 'Summertastic' and it's evident that this is what families should be doing together, and yet there are so few families out in the park on this beautiful Summer day.
"The Jungle Blackboard" another wonderful term coined by Richard Louv in 'Last Child in the Woods' (2008) and I'm witnessing more enthusiastic learning from a few hours of 'out and about' in Highbury Park, than many children will get in a complete term stuck in the class room.
How do I know? Where's the evidence?
Well I've seen my child discovering new things, asking questions, interacting and reconnecting with nature, listening, laughing, falling over and cutting his knee, then getting up again to get on with it, smelling things, tasting things, making potions from berries, all in a few hours of guided yet free play with other families.
We made fire, dens, rope swings, played hide and seek, tracking, rounders, listened to stories and watched with glee as our children smiled, laughed and cried and went home at the end of each day completely shattered, mentally and physically.
